Graham Norton Debunks Theory Taylor Swift Shot 'Opalite' Video Before His Show

Graham Norton has dismissed as a "conspiracy theory" the rumor that Taylor Swift filmed her "Opalite" music video before appearing on his chat show, then arranged for its cast to join him on the sofa.

Speaking at the Royal Television Society conference in London, Norton addressed the online speculation head-on. The video, released in February this year, guest stars Norton and features Domhnall Gleeson, Greta Lee, Jodie Turner-Smith, Cillian Murphy and Lewis Capaldi — the exact lineup that sat alongside Swift on "The Graham Norton Show" last October.

That coincidence fueled the theory.

"The Swifties, they love a conspiracy theory," Norton said, referring to Swift's army of fans. "So there were Swifties who thought we'd filmed the music video first and then orchestrated to get all the people on the sofa."

Broadcaster Tina Daheley, who was interviewing Norton on stage, corrected the record: "It was literally an idea she came up with while she was on the show."

Norton agreed, while admitting uncertainty about the exact sequence. "Yeah, yeah. I don't know, but certainly when you watch the clips, there is a moment when it looks like she's having the idea, and it's kind of amazing to have the show get that kind of recognition," he said.

Seeing his famous sofa brought to life in Swift's video was "really odd," Norton added, and it "made my dreams come true."

The "Opalite" video casts Swift and Gleeson as two singles unlucky in love who eventually find their way to each other, entering a dance contest along the way. Lee, Turner-Smith, Murphy and Capaldi all make cameo appearances.

The origin story traces back to the BBC recording last October, when Swift appeared alongside Gleeson, Lee, Turner-Smith, Murphy and Capaldi on Norton's show, known for its eclectic weekly mix of celebrity guests. During the recording, Gleeson quipped about appearing in one of Swift's music videos.

Swift later revealed that at that moment the concept "crash-landed into my imagination" — while she was still sitting on Norton's sofa.

The episode now stands as a rare case of a late-night chat show directly midwifing a major pop video, and Norton's account confirms the sofa came first.
