Jennifer Lawrence to Star in Zach Cregger's Sci-Fi Thriller 'The Flood'

Jennifer Lawrence will star in Zach Cregger's sci-fi thriller The Flood, a Warner Bros. and New Line Cinema production scheduled for release on Aug. 11, 2028. Cregger will write, produce and direct the film.

Amblin Entertainment produces alongside Roy Lee and Miri Yoon of Vertigo Entertainment. Plot details and further casting remain under wraps.

Lawrence, who won the Academy Award for Best Actress for 2012's Silver Linings Playbook, adds prestige to Cregger's latest genre project. She remains best known for launching the Hunger Games franchise as Katniss Everdeen. Her recent credits include Die My Love with Robert Pattinson, Gene Stupnitsky's comedy No Hard Feelings and the A24 drama Causeway.

Her upcoming slate is crowded. Lawrence will appear in Martin Scorsese's thriller What Happens at Night and in the Hunger Games prequel Sunrise on the Reaping.

The Flood marks Cregger's return to Warner Bros. after the studio released his 2025 horror mystery Weapons. That film, a follow-up to his 2022 breakout Barbarian, grossed $270 million worldwide on a budget of less than $40 million. Weapons also earned Amy Madigan the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for her role as Aunt Gladys, who steals a classroom full of children in the middle of the night from under the noses of their teacher and parents.

Cregger praised the studio relationship. "Mike, Pam and the whole Warner Bros./New Line team were an absolute dream to collaborate with on 'Weapons,' and I couldn't be happier to dive in with them again," he said in a statement. "Jennifer is one of a kind, and I'm beyond excited to see her in this role."

Warner Bros. co-chairs Mike De Luca and Pam Abdy matched the enthusiasm. "Jennifer Lawrence is one of the most gifted and compelling actors working today, and we are thrilled to have her at the center of Zach's bold and wholly original vision for 'The Flood,'" they said. "Following our extraordinary experience together on 'Weapons,' we could not be more excited to reunite with Zach and the team at Vertigo, as well as Amblin to bring this ambitious film to audiences around the world."

With a marquee star attached, a proven genre filmmaker and a locked 2028 date, The Flood positions Warner Bros. to build on the commercial formula that made Weapons one of the studio's most profitable recent releases.
