Madonna Wins Artist of the Year at 2026 VMAs: "I Spent the Last Year-and-a-Half Finding Myself"

Madonna won Artist of the Year at the 2026 MTV Video Music Awards, held Sunday at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles. She beat Ariana Grande, Bruno Mars, Morgan Wallen, Sabrina Carpenter, and Taylor Swift for the honor, then returned to the stage later in the evening to collect Best Dance for "Confessions II – The Film."

She came into the ceremony leading all nominees with 13 nods, most of them for the short film accompanying her new album, Confessions II. The Sabrina Carpenter collaboration "Bring Your Love" also won Best Collaboration.

"First of all, I would like to thank my fingers because I can always count on them," Madonna joked at the top of her Artist of the Year acceptance speech. She then recounted her debut at the very first VMAs in 1984. "I had a little problem with my shoes … and I dove onto the stage to try to make myself look cute and sexy and like I meant to do it," she said. "I went backstage feeling really proud of myself and my manager told me that my career was over."

The anecdote set up the speech's central message. "I spent the last year-and-a-half finding myself, believing in myself and really making the music I wanted to make … My hope for all of you here tonight is that you spend the next year or the next 10 years or the rest of your life doing the same," she said. She thanked longtime confidant and producer Stuart Price, calling him her "ride or die," and reflected on the scale of her comeback: "Who knew that 20 years after Confessions [on a Dancefloor] we could pull it off again [with Confessions II]?"

Accepting Best Dance from presenters Charli XCX and Troye Sivan, whom she invited to her side, Madonna thanked "Confessions II – The Film" director Torso "for going on this adventure with me." A joke about having a laser somewhere NSFW did not land with the audience.

She then spoke about dance as the foundation of her life and career. "I came to New York to be a dancer and dance is where everything happened for me in my life," she said. "I came to life on the dance floor, I fell in love with people on the dance floor, and I lost many people I loved on the dance floor. [And] dance brings everybody together. We're all equal on the dance floor."

Earlier in the evening, Madonna opened the broadcast with a performance of "Bring Your Love" and "Danceteria." Sabrina Carpenter, Charli XCX, Sombr, Julia Garner, Debi Mazar, Seth Rogen, Andrew Watt, and Fab Five Freddy made cameos.

Snoop Dogg hosted the 2026 VMAs, airing live on CBS and MTV and streaming on Paramount+ (Premium). With Artist of the Year, Best Dance, and Best Collaboration in hand, Madonna has now converted the year's most-nominated campaign into one of the defining nights of her five-decade career — and, by her own account, she made the music she wanted to make.
