'Minions & Monsters' Streams on Peacock Starting Oct. 28

“Minions & Monsters” will be available to stream on Peacock on Oct. 28, bringing the seventh installment of the “Despicable Me” franchise to subscribers little more than three months after its theatrical release.
The film opened in theaters on July 1 with a voice cast led by Allison Janney, Jeff Bridges and Jesse Eisenberg. Pierre Coffin, the series co-creator and the voice of the Minions, directed the film alongside Patrick Delage.
The story is set in 1920s Hollywood, at the moment the film industry was shifting to include projects with sound. The premise turns on a linguistic joke with real stakes: as talkies arrive, the Minions confront the fact that nobody can understand their Minionese language. And, in true Minion fashion, chaos ensues when the yellow creatures accidentally release monsters out into the world.
Zoey Deutch, Bobby Moynihan and “South Park” co-creator Trey Parker round out the voice cast. Movie pioneer George Lucas also appears in the film.
The picture doubles as a film-history scavenger hunt. It features several references to Hollywood classics ranging from “Citizen Kane” to “The Blob.” It also pays homage to old Hollywood in a scene where Max, voiced by Christoph Waltz, calls out the Minions' names — names that happen to belong to famous directors, such as Federico (Fellini) and Erich (von Stroheim).
The franchise behind the film has amassed an unmatched commercial record. The “Despicable Me” movies marked the first animated franchise to cross $5 billion at the global box office.
That run began in 2010 with the original “Despicable Me,” which featured Steve Carell as supervillain Gru. Before “Minions & Monsters,” fans received the spinoff sequel “Minions: The Rise of Gru” in 2022, followed by “Despicable Me 4” in 2024.
Coffin recently broke down the Minionese language with Variety, explaining that he draws from Japanese, Filipino, Korean, Hindi, German and Indonesian dialects to construct the Minions' speech — the very language that becomes the characters' professional obstacle in the new film's sound-era setting.
The Peacock release gives the franchise's audience a first chance to parse those Hollywood references at pause-button speed, and it positions “Minions & Monsters” as the streaming platform's marquee family title heading into the holiday viewing season.
