Opera Australia will present its first new mainstage production of Puccini's "La Bohème" in 15 years, running at the Regent Theatre in Melbourne from Nov. 7 to 18.
Constantine Costi directs. Dann Barber designs the set, Sabina Myers the costumes and Morgan Moroney the lighting. The production sets the opera in 20th century Paris.
The cast pairs international and Australian singers. Soprano Galina Cheplakova, making her Australian debut, shares the role of Mimì with Italian soprano Valeria Sepe. Australian-Chinese tenor Kang Wang shares Rodolfo with Italian tenor Paride Cataldo, who makes his Opera Australia debut. Australian soprano Alexandra Flood sings Musetta in a homecoming engagement.
Finnegan Downie Dear, also making his company debut, conducts Orchestra Victoria, the Opera Australia Chorus and the Opera Australia Children's Chorus.
The Melbourne run offers audiences a first look at how Costi and his design team reinterpret a work the company has not freshly staged on its mainstage since the previous production 15 years ago, and it marks the Australian debuts of two of its principal singers.
