Taylor Swift Premieres “Patient Zero” Video at 2026 VMAs

Taylor Swift premiered the music video for “Patient Zero” at the 2026 Video Music Awards on Sunday night. The track appears on her recent release, The Life of a Showgirl: The Encore.

The clip co-stars Dakota Johnson and Colin Farrell. It follows a slowly dissolving relationship between a married couple, played by Johnson and Farrell, while the husband’s now-deceased ex-wife — Swift — attempts to warn Johnson before it’s too late. Cara Delevingne also appears in the video.

The VMAs proved a fitting stage for the drop. Swift received the inaugural MTV VMA Artist Director Honors this year, a new award reserved, per the network, for artists “whose work behind the camera has expanded the possibilities of music video and advanced the art of visual storytelling.”

Swift went into the evening with nine VMA nominations, making her the second-most nominated artist of the night. Madonna led with 13.

The premiere capped a busy week for Swift. On Friday she released an expanded edition of her 2025 album The Life of a Showgirl. The four new songs on The Life of a Showgirl: The Encore — “Patient Zero,” “Cleveland!,” “Pink Clouding,” and “Babylon” — were written with the album’s co-producers, Max Martin and Shellback, while Swift was celebrating the record’s success in Sweden in 2025.

With a new directors’ honor on her shelf and a ghost-narrative video starring two A-list actors, Swift continues to stake her claim as much a filmmaker as a recording artist — and the Encore tracks suggest the Showgirl era is not finished expanding.
